Having met Jateen Bhana on a soccer field a few years ago at our local soccer club, I have seen his undeniable passion grow in leaps and bounds in our community. He took over the mentorship of the kids soccer club and took them to levels never experienced before. He is a talented and committed teacher, coach, mentor and sports scientist.

He has also been instrumental in improving the physical strength of my three boys aged 6, 12 and 15  focusing on training specifically related to children and their physical development through his Strength:Lab Superheroes programme for kids. He ensures that they are able to enjoy training by diversifying the classes with engaging themes. I started training at Strength:Lab with Coach Jateen 2 years ago.I had many challenges relating to flexibility ,muscle strength and endurance.Play, school sports and athletics always posed challenges.

Coach Jateen understood these challenges and with dedication and determination he has helped me to achieve many goals.

My core muscle strength has improved.  My flexibility has improved quite a bit and I am proud to say that the training with Strength:Lab has helped me  get  into the swim team at school. I have also become a better netball player which has made me happy.

I have been with training with coach Jateen at Strength:Lab for the last 2 years.

I love the Strength:Lab programme and sessions. They have helped me improve and sharpen my crickets bowling skills and they have also helped me developed some strength to improve my soccer skills and overall fitness and endurance for soccer games.

During Lockdown Strength:Lab offered gym classes over Zoom.They are still fun and we are glad we can continue our Strength:Lab sessions.  I’ve achieved a goal pf wanting to became famous when Strength:Lab was featured on a television piece and I was in the clip.

My eldest son of 12 years has been training with Jateen for 18 months. I noticed a really big difference within the first few months. He has always struggled with a weak core and constant neck pain. He was also an average athlete. Since training with Jateen the neck pain has disappeared and he has gone from being an average athlete to being in the top of his class. He always also looks forward to his training sessions which is a huge plus.

As a cyclist, I started training at Strength:Lab with Jateen with the intention of improving my overall conditioning. Within weeks I could feel the difference as my improved core and overall strength translated into massive improvements on the bike. This year I managed my Cape Argus PB after many years of chasing it even though I completed the Otter Trail literally a week before.

Never too many squat or lunge variations either to allow me to achieve both of these within a week and very efficient recovery.  Jateen is always innovative with his sessions which change continuously ensuring that it is never monotonous and always fun.

Working out at any gym is never a highlight of my week. However, with Strength:Lab, Jateen is enthusiastic, motivating, and knowledgeable about all things fitness and that’s what got me hooked. He is completely in tune with my running goals, and customises my strength program to ensure i meet them. He also pushes me to make sure I meet them. He is very creative in progressing our strength sessions, making them fun and challenging at the same time. I have yet to wake up the day after a session and not felt the dull ache of satisfied muscles.

Our strength sessions have drastically assisted my body in dealing with the stresses of running. Jateen trains your muscles to perform longer before getting fatigued, I have seen the results in my marathons! His sessions have definitely made my running more effective and enjoyable!”

What started out as a 21 day lockdown challenge has become a new way of life for me!  Four times a week, in the comfort and non-judgement of my own home – I log on to the virtual classes and I am able to train the same way I would with a 1 on 1 coach.  Jateen trains with you, watches how you progress and regularly checks in on you as we go through the 45 minute session.  He also follows up with you after your sessions and talks you through your pain points.  He combines exercise with science and knowledge explaining to you how your body works through the exercises.  He has pushed me to challenge myself and progress with every session by doing simple things such as adding 10 seconds on to a plank challenge daily.  The exercises are not repetitive, resulting in me looking forward to every session!  With every session comes different challenges that trains your body and stimulates your brain.  My favourite of late is the ladder where you compete with yourself to achieve what you once thought was impossible!  I started by not being able to do 1 burpee but through encouragement and breaking down the exercise by Jateen, I have progressed to doing half burpees within week 4 of training with him.  I have since been able to complete 10 burpees without stopping and have done a total of 29 burpees in 1 class – just 6 weeks in!

My whole way of exercising has changed since I started training with Jateen – I look forward to exercise, I think about the impact the exercises have on my mobility and strength and I am also learning about how the body works through exercise!

I started running in 2015, albeit it half-heartedly. It was mostly because I was tired of just sitting around and waiting for my husband to finish races. I ran my first half marathon at the end of 2016 and thought that was the hardest thing that I had even done. In 2017, through a series of conversations, I entered the 2018 Comrades Marathon. In 4 months, I prepared for my first 32km race, which I completed. At this point, the bug had bitten. It was amazing what a little bit of preparation could do! In six months, I went from running my first marathon to completing my first Comrades marathon! In 2019, I then got my back to back medal for the event.

At the end of Comrades 2019, I was frustrated because I had put in so much effort, but my times were not improving. I realised that I had plateaued because I was training based on my own readings and relative inexperience. The only way to improve was to re-think my training and for that, I needed a coach. Through another series of conversations, I linked up with Strength:Lab Running and Coach Jateen.

In the few months prior to lockdown, Jateen gave me a great routine and structure to my training. He uses the Training Peaks platform to monitor my personal statistics so that all the workouts are geared to my capabilities. I have been pushed and challenged both mentally and physically and this has resulted in tangible changes to my performance. I enjoy being able to pick his brain about the reasons behind my program, which has also been a helpful learning experience for me.

Since lockdown started, I was concerned about losing all the fitness that we had worked so hard to develop! However, this presented Jateen with an opportunity to develop an online strength training platform that focused on regular functional body weight strength classes. Since doing this, I have noticed a difference in terms of my physical strength and muscle tone. The integration of these strength sessions with the focused running program has also made a significant difference to my running! I have managed to break 3 different personal best records in two weeks since starting these classes. These classes are also a lot of fun! By using this combination of strength training techniques with the running has given me renewed motivation.

Jateen is always available, approachable, knowledgeable, accommodating and realistic but most importantly, he will also challenge you in many spheres of your training! I am very much a social runner and always will be. That said, having a structured and evidence-based training program has been invaluable and I would recommend it for anyone at any stage of their running life. Handing my training over to Jateen has been one of the best decisions that I have made, and I look forward to many more years under his guidance…

I started my running journey in March of 2018 and already ran my first 21km in November of that year. Just before than I befriended Jateen Bhana, who has assisted me since then in achieving my goals. The individual attention that one receives in Jateen’s programme, makes Jateen’s coaching a unique approach, which is friendly, professional and if I have to say it myself, fun!

In 2019, at the age of 42, I took on my first marathon. Which for me, was only a dream and became a reality at the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.

Jateen conducts excellent continuous assessments of your individual needs and goals and provides a consistent and regular training programme that enables you to realise your goals. Each programme is tailored to ensure that you will reach your goal.

In 2020, I engaged strength training with Jateen that has assisted me in building my core muscle and toning my body and enhanced my running. Running has changed my life, it has made me stronger, more focussed, and totally dedicated and addicted to running. I owe my running achievements and journey to Jateen!

I have been training with Jateen for over three years. I am goal orientated and enjoy structure in my running. This is exactly what Jateen has provided taking my running to new levels. Through working with Jateen I learned the importance of having a program structured to my individual fitness level and goals, both short term and long term. The way I used to do things I was prone to injuries through incorrect training practices but I am pleased to say that doesn’t happen any more. I have become stronger and faster and I ascribe this purely to Jateen’s day by day personal attention and guidance.

Jateen takes your goals and through his weekly personalised programs leads you to your full potential, well prepared for your event. Jateen has organised my training in a very structured way. He is always there to answer my queries and offer advice.I have completed each and every event that I have trained for often doing better than I expected.

With the Covid 19 outbreak and the ultimate lockdown Jateen set up an online daily strength class from his StrengthLab studio. Initially it was a 21 Day lockdown challenge which I did every day. I am feeling much stronger as a result. Jateen has continued with these classes due to their popularity. The classes are varied from HIIT, mobility, strength and stretching all related to running. I can highly recommend Jateen’s coaching/ training programs. Running has never felt better.

My running journey started about 4 years ago. Running has become a big part of my life, I have gained many friends, I have achieved many goals and It is something that adds only but value to my life. I signed up with Strength:lab Running and Coach Jateen very shortly after I started running. I needed to have a professional on board to help me to achieve my goals and to ensure I remained consistent and disciplined.

Coach Jateen has been a Rock Star. He has helped me achieve my personal bests in a 5km, 10km, and 21km. I have run 3 marathons and to this day I still can’t believe I did 42km’s. His programmes are precise, well-structured and customised to suit my specific running needs. He knows when I need to rest, he knows when I’m being lazy and he knows exactly when to give me a bit of a motivational “kick-ass” speech.

I have also incorporated his strength sessions on my “Active Rest Days” with the online Strength:Lab sessions that assist in developing strength and has prevented me from developing injuries.

I’m so grateful that he is my coach and I look forward to achieving many more goals together !!!

I am not a disciplined athlete at all. I need someone to tell me what to do. I started working with Jateen just over 3 years ago. With busy life I didn’t want to start something that needed a lot of my free time for it to work.

I struggled to do the training at first as I had totally different view of how to train. But Jateen weaned me in slowing to adjust to the different variations to training. This ranged from time based training, to distance, pace, heart rate, speed-work and more. I continue to learn a lot from a programme that is made to suit me and my personal running ability. The challenge is always me against myself. I am learning to work through injuries, to listen to my body and be accountable for all I do as well as how to be mentally and physically prepared for every challenge . Not always easy though – discipline!

Other than running, I recently did some online workout sessions with Strength:Lab. These were super beneficial when there was no alternate exercise options. Each session focused on something different. Be it glutes, arms, core or leg workouts. It was great and suitable for anyone no matter what the level of fitness. These sessions are still available on recordings.

Since I started with Jateen, my personal achievement was overcoming an injury that lasted almost 2 years and finally completing my 4th Comrades Marathon in 2018. This was my longest ever, and overall my personal best. I highly recommend his coaching to anyone be it a novice or elite – Jateen has the patience and the experience that has been tried and tested by many including himself.

I started running in 2014, like anyone else it was to keep fit, I hated going to the gym and was gaining some unwanted weight.

Made good progress and fell off the wagon amidst some health issues unbeknown to me at the time. When I eventually figured that out, I was introduced to NRC and later a social running group called Run Tell That. This is where I learned that there was more to running, pace, technique, stretching and races. I’m 2017 I entered my first Pick n Pay 8km fun run and blossomed from there. Through all the growth, I met Jateen at Strength:Lab through my physiotherapist, Cindy Nel and started training with him in October 2018.

It took me a while to get used to the online training situation but soon realized that it’s no different from training alone, just with some structure and science to a training schedule. The one thing I needed was feedback and a safe space to ask questions and learn. Jateen provided exactly that. Through all his experience, he has been phenomenal as a coach. Jateen has been always been patient, understanding, reliable and always willing to share his knowledge to empower his clients to grow as a runner, no matter what their goal is.
